Shelly Peterson Is In Mercy Hospital

DMG and Shelly PetersonOne of my dearest friends, Shelly (Bernardini) Peterson -- OLP '81 and St. Didacus '77 -- suffered a heart attack Saturday around noon in her Normal Heights kitchen.

Luckily, Shelly's husband Pete Peterson was there to begin CPR and call 911, and the ambulance crew arrived in time to be there when her heart stopped! All of them brought her back.

Shelly is recovering now at Mercy Hospital. She was sedated for two days, so she still is somewhat dazed and confused.

Please think about Shelly, pray for her one and all of you who read this, and if Shell ever crossed your path and made you laugh and/or smile even once, please visit her too!

This picture of Shelly and I was taken by Jeannie Portugal in 2003.

"Radio Gals" Features Alum Of OLP & USD

Radio GalsTalented singer/actress Bettina "Pixie" (O'Donnell) Warren, who graduated from the Academy of Our Lady of Peace in 1978, then attended the University of San Diego for several years before eventually transferring to San Diego State, is one of the stars of a show called "Radio Gals," which opened January 27 at the Avo Playhouse in Vista.

The play is funny and frantic and filled with music and mirth! Pixie barely leaves the stage during the entire production, so it is a couple hours of getting to watch her perform almost non-stop! That's Pixie on the right side of this flier, by the way, next to the s in Gals.

Produced by Moonlight Stage Productions, "Radio Gals" is a musical comedy by Mike Craver and Mark Hardwick, the same writing team who created "Pump Boys and Dinettes." It will run until February 20 at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, and also at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Local theater legends Don and Bonnie Ward directed and choreographed the play.

Besides being in this show, Pixie (along with her husband -- former USD student Tom Warren) is among the partners in Schroeder's Club and Cabaret, which held its first successful season last year at the Westin Horton Plaza. The second season at Schroeder's will begin soon.

Larry Lehrke Memorial Bocce Tournament

2004 Bocce TournamentThe 11th annual Larry Lehrke Memorial Bocce Tournament will be held this Saturday, January 29, at Sunset Park (across West Mission Bay Drive from the Hyatt Islandia Hotel). This picture taken at last year's event shows co-organizer Ross Provenzano speaking to all of the players right before the opportunity drawing began.

Larry LehrkeStaff Sgt. Stanley Lawrence "Larry" Lehrke, a 1966 graduate of St. Augustine High School, was aboard an Air Force gunship that was shot down in 1972 during the Vietnam War. He was listed as Missing In Action from then until his remains were recovered in 1993 and identified in 1994. Several of Larry's classmates set up a scholarship fund in his honor at Saints, and they eventually started the bocce tournament as its main fund raiser. This picture of Larry is from the 1966 St. Augustine yearbook.

St. Didacus Elementary School alumsThe tournament will begin at 9 a.m. with registration and opportunity drawing ticket sales. Mixed doubles teams will be formed by a blind draw, with the bocce play beginning immediately thereafter. The drawing will be held after a lunch break, then the day wraps up with championship play and awards presentation. For more information or to donate prizes for the drawing, call Ross Provenzano at 858-488-2734 or e-mail rosspro@san.rr.com. The bottom photo was taken at last year's event and it features a bunch of people who all attended St. Didacus Elementary School in Normal Heights.
